USO 1 Duración Antes de Algo en el Pasado



Usamos Past Perfect Continuous para demostrar que algo comnezó en el pasado y continuó hasta otro momento en el pasado. "For five minutes" y "for two weeks" son duraciones que pueden ser utilizadas con Past Perfect Continuous. Ten en cuenta que esto está relacionado con Present Perfect Continuous, sin embargo, la duración no continúa hasta ahora, se detiene antes de algo distinto en el pasado.


Ejemplos:


  • They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.

  • She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.

  • How long had you been waiting to get on the bus?

  • Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work.

  • James had been teaching at the university for more than a year before he left for Asia.

  • A: How long had you been studying Turkish before you moved to Ankara?

  • B: I had not been studying Turkish very long.


USE 2 Causa de Algo en el Pasado



Usar Past Perfect Continuous antes de otra acción en el pasado es una buena manera de mostrar causa y efecto.


Ejemplos:

  • Jason was tired because he had been jogging.

  • Sam gained weight because he had been overeating.

  • Betty failed the final test because she had not been attending class.


Past Continuous vs. Past Perfect Continuous

Si no incluyes una duración tal como "for five minutes," "for two weeks" o "since Friday," muchas personas de habla inglesa optan por utilizar Past Continuous en vez del Past Perfect Continuous. Ten cuidado porque esto puede cambiar el significado de la oración. Past Continuous enfatiza acciones interrumpidas, mientras Past Perfect Continuous enfatiza una duración de tiempo antes de algo en el pasado. Estudia los ejemplos a continuación para entender la diferencia.


Ejemplos:

  • He was tired because he was exercising so hard.

  • Esta oración enfatiza que él estaba cansado porque había estado ejercitando en ese momento exacto.

  • He was tired because he had been exercising so hard.

  • Esta oración enfatiza que él estaba cansado porque había estado haciendo ejercicio durante un período de tiempo. Es posible que todavía estuviese ejercitando en ese momento O acababa de terminar.


RECUERDA: Non-Continuous Verbs / Mixed Verbs

Es importante recordar que los Non-Continuous Verbs (Tipos de verbos) no se pueden utilizar en ningún tiempo continuo. También, ciertos significados no continuos de algunos  Mixed Verbs (Tipos de verbos) no se pueden utilizar en tiempos continuos. En lugar de utilizar Past Perfect Continuous con estos verbos, debes utilizar Past Perfect.


Ejemplos:


  • The motorcycle had been belonging to George for years before Tina bought it. Not Correct

  • The motorcycle had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it. Correct


UBICACION DE ADVERBIOS

Los ejemplos siguientes muestran la colocación de los adverbios gramaticales tales como: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.


Ejemplos:

  • You had only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived.

  • Had you only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived?


ACTIVO / PASIVO

Ejemplos:


  • Chef Jones had been preparing the restaurant's fantastic dinners for two years before he moved to Paris. Active

  • The restaurant's fantastic dinners had been being prepared by Chef Jones for two years before he moved to Paris. Passive


OJO: Las formas pasivas de Past Perfect Continuous no son comunes.
