Future in the past
Tal como Simple Future, Future in the Past tiene dos formas diferentes en Inglés: "would" y "was going to." Aunque las dos formas a veces se pueden utilizar indistintamente, a menudo expresan dos significados diferentes.
[would + VERBO]
I knew you would help him.
I knew you would not help him.
[was/were + going to + VERBO]
I knew you were going to go to the party.
I knew you were not going to go to the party.
Future in the Past es utilizado para expresar la idea de que en el pasado se pensó que algo iba a suceder en el futuro. No importa si se estaba en lo correcto o no. Future in the Past sigue las mismas reglas básicas que Simple Future. "Would se utiliza acciones voluntarias o promesas, y "was going to" se usa para planificar. Por otra parte, ambas formas se pueden utilizar para hacer predicciones sobre el futuro.
I told you he was going to come to the party. plan
I knew Julie would make dinner. acción voluntaria
Jane said Sam was going to bring his sister with him, but he came alone. plan
I had a feeling that the vacation was going to be a disaster. predicción
He promised he would send a postcard from Egypt. promesa
Como en todas las formas del futuro, Future in the Past no puede ser utilizado en clauses comenzando con expresiones de tiempo, tales como: when, while, before, after, by the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc. En vez de utilizar Future in the Past, debes usar Simple Past.
I already told Mark that when he would arrive, we would go out for dinner. Incorrecto
